One of the most important questions that creep through the minds of engineering aspirants is “What is the difference between BE and BTech?”. Many experts have tried to answer this question, but some important points are still intact. This article will cover some important aspects, such as key differences, similarities and answers to some of the common questions, including a final conclusion that will greatly help engineering aspirants.

In India, we have two types of colleges, one that offer degrees in many fields such as art, science, business, including engineering and are generally known as universities, and the second, that offer titles only in engineering and are generally known as institutes . Universities that offer other degrees along with engineering called their bachelor’s degree in engineering as B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) and Institutes that provide professional courses such as engineering named their engineering degrees as B. Tech. (Bachelor of Technology).

Some of the key differences between the two courses are:

Bachelor of Engineering

Bachelor of Technology

B.E. is considered as knowledge-oriented course. B. Tech is considered as skill-oriented course.
More emphasis is laid on theory and focuses on strong fundamentals. More emphasis is laid on practical applications rather than theoretical aspects.
Being more knowledge oriented, course curriculum is updated but not as frequent as the other. Being technology oriented, course curriculum is considered as more upto date.
Internships and industrial visits may be an essential part of the curriculum. Internships and industrial visits are a mandatory part of the curriculum.
Generally, universities offering other degrees (like science, arts, education etc.) along with engineering named their engineering degree as B.E. Generally, institutes (including IITs) offering only Engineering studies named their degree as B.Tech.
Some of the popular colleges are NSIT, BITS-Pilani, Anna University Chennai etc. Some of the popular colleges are IITs, NITs, DTU etc.

Similarities between the two courses are:

  • In India, duration of both the courses is 4 years
  • Both courses follow semester pattern, with 2 semesters per year and a total of 8 semesters in 4 years
  • Orientation and approach of both the courses may be different but if we closely look into the course content then they are more or less the same
  • AICTE has clarified that it does not consider the two degrees as different and grants equal recognition to both
  • Both the degrees have almost similar scope and future
  • If there is some notification for recruitment of B.E. degree holder then B.Tech. degree holders are also eligible to apply and vice-versa
